I recently bought a new desktop computer, it was a sweet deal coming to a little over $400 after a $100 mail in rebate.
It's an Hp Elite computer featuring an AMD phenom 2.2ghz processor(thats 4 cores), 2gb of pc6400 ram and a 500gb hard disk, tv tuner, wireless card, and bluetooth.
Now what I did when I got it is, to buy a new power supply, an Antec earthwatts 5oow. The machine only shipped with a 350w. I bought another 2gb of ram for $28 and took my old 500gb hard drive(with my operating system still intact) and my ATI x1800xt video card nd popped them in. First I made a recovery disk set of the original system the computer shipped with.
When I tossed in my older hard drive, I had to fiddle with the vista start up recovery a few times, but ultimately got it to recognize. I then formatted the newer hard drive which left me with my previous install of Vista Ultimate x64 and all my software still there without having to reinstall anything.
I found that the wireless card that shipped with the unit wasn't performing so well. It was a foxconn wireless N and I barely got to the speed of G. So I tossed it out and put in my Linksys Wireless N card. I also have a 500gb lacie external, a western digital 500gb my book external and a western digital 1tb my book external connected. On a sad note I am sending my Seagate 500gb free agent back for an RMA. I also have my logitech quickcam fusion, 5.1 creative speakers(though no creative sound card this time), logitech mx 5000 desktop/keyboard (wireless bluetooth), another tv tuner via usb wintv 950. And of course my lovely HP d7460 printer, it's also wireless for my notebooks.
It's definitely a nice setup, but I wonder if my other custom build will be better with the intel quad core? Who knows, but I must thank Microsoft for the smooth transition from an my previous machine to this one without having to reinstall everything. I did have to reactivate, but that only took about a minute and I didn't even have to call them. Now if I can just find some great software for free to let me playback HD DVDs from my xbox360 addon drive connected to my comouter via usb. hehe. What do y'all think?
