Through the years I have seen many laptop users make one minor, but time consuming mistake. And it all has to do with how you close the lid on your laptop. No only can you lose time, but in some cases data can be lost or corrupted.
The problem: The user selects to shut down the computer and immediately closes the lid. What happens (both Windows and Mac) is as the computer is processing the shutdown commands-the computer can still enter standby or hibernation. The end result is going to turn on the laptop only to have it come up and immediately shutdown. Thus you have to turn the laptop on a second time.
The solution: Actually I have two. The first is patience; wait until the screen turns off before closing the lid. The second is a simple setting you can change. Under power management settings choose the option under what closing the lid does. If you set this to ‘do nothing’ then the laptop will continue to shutdown after closing the lid. Alternatively, you could choose to tell it to shutdown when the lid is closed.
