Yesterday, I finished setting up my main desktop, an upgraded HP A1430n, with Windows Vista Ultimate 64bit edition. But before I go into details on that, let me tell what is upgraded on my machine. The standard configuration as it was shipped was this:
Athlon 64 X2 3800+ 2.0 GHz
1 GB Ram, 250gb 7200rpm SATA Hard Disk
16X DVD(+/-)R/RW (+/-)R DL LightScribe drive
Integrated Graphics and Audio
Running Windows XP Media Center Edition 2005
Since then I have added 500gb SATA 7200rpm hard disk as a secondary drive,
an ATI X1800 512mb PCI Express video card, Creative Labs X-FI Platinum Soundcard, a Usb Hauppage MCE edition tv tuner, a western Digital My Book Premium 500gb external hard drive and a Linksys WMP300n Wireless N Network Card.
Now, I had decided to run a dual boot scenario as to not only to easily transfer files over, but to make sure that all my software works well with Vista. Now the only I wasn't sure about was whether both a 64bit OS and a 32bit OS could co-exist, however and nulling over the question in my mind I figure there should be no conflicts as both OS would be independent. I knew I wanted to move into a 64bit OS, so the upgrade option was not gonna work for me.
So my first step, make sure my files were backed up and that I had recovery disc set for my computer. Once that was taken care of I popped by Vista Ultimate 64bit dvd into my drive and booted my computer from said dvd. I went through the setup and made sure to select the new 500gb hard disk( I had previously labeled this disk Vista for easy recognizing it in Setup).
Vista installed with no issues and most of my hardware and peripherals drivers were installed automatically. I had to download my sound card drivers, tv tuner and my video card drivers. I chose to stay with the drivers windows provided for my Linkys wireless card for now. It works great and Linksys does not have 64 bit drivers for Vista just yet, nor does Western Digital for 'My Book Premium' external hard disks. They will work, but the Firewire button manager will be an unknown device in the device manager. Once all the drivers were installed, I ran the windows update utility, selected to download more than just windows updates and installed everyone that came up. I had to restart a few times to finish the install. Next, I installed my programs: Office 2003 Pro, Photoshop CS2, Dreamweaver 8, Flash 8, Fireworks 8, Nero, Firefox, etc. I then downloaded the updates and extensions and plugins for those applications. I was nearly done.
Now this was the interesting part, the easy part. Windows Vista comes with a tool call Windows Easy Transfer Wizard, I ran this in Windows Xp to gather all my files, email settings and other application/system settings. Then rebooted back in to Vista and ran it to copy those over. Here is one thing to note, when in XP run the Transfer program from the 32bit Vista disc, the 64bit disc will not run. The run the 64bit disc in vista. The files are saved in a *.mig file which I saved on my 500gb external for easy access. And thats that. I'm now running both and loving Vista (mostly). I still need camera raw support from Canon and Nikon. One thins I can saw is that Vista Aero looks great on my Samsung 215tw 21in LCD.
Any Questions?
