Monopoly has always been one of my favorite board games. Naturally, I couldn’t resist the temptation to pick up Monopoly Streets for my Xbox 360. I almost bought it for the Wii, but ultimately I decided I wanted to earn Gamerscore through Achievements.
This is your standard Monopoly with a few twists. Such as the addition of characters to go along with your tokens. Choose the Car and your paired with a racecar driver for example. These characters have a very child like appeal to them and also provide a few laughs- mainly while interacting/ talking to Mr. Monopoly. But if you don’t like them or you get tired of them you can press Y after choosing your token to switch your character to your Xbox Live Avatar. You’ll also see your friends avatars walking around the ‘Monopoly City board while playing. Excuse me while I pay rent of $950 while staying at St. Charles Place.
You get to choose the board to play on. Monopoly City is pretty cool. It’s a 3D world built around the board. We also have the Original, Cheese, Jungle and others. As you play and level up-you earn money that can be used to buy or unlock new boards and tokens. There is also content available on Xbox Live Marketplace.
As for Gameplay, you can choose from a list of rules or create your own. You can play up to four people both locally on the same Xbox 360 or via Xbox Live. Don’t have enough Human players then you can choose up to 3 CPU players with a difficulty of easy, medium, or hard to bring you to a total of four players. Controls are very simple and easy to understand. Mostly the A button and the directional stick.
My verdict: While a little childish and slightly cheesy, this is Monopoly and truly is fun. Granted this is best played with family and friends. Playing by yourself is still fun though. Online play seems to be few and far between as I have yet to find anyone else playing online. Playing against the computer while challenging may get you frustrated. So many rolls of Doubles. Graphics are not super high end, but still very well done and detailed. The achievements are a challenge, but not super difficult either.
If you’ll play it with friends and family, it is well worth the price. If you will be playing solo, wait for a sale.
Well, it’s been fun, but I have to advance to go and collect $200.
