Mass Effect 2 on the PS3 With Comfort

imageHaving acquired a copy of Mass Effect 2 for the PS3 I decided to pop it in and see how what is like compared to Xbox 360 version. Now I previously beat the game on the Xbox 360 which gave me an edge as to what I had to do. But before I played I had to take into consideration the PS3 gamepad which I don’t particularly enjoy. And as it was this endeavor gave me the opportunity to try the Subsonic Comfort Triggers and Stick enhancements. Basically it makes the triggers larger and a sort of rail on the left thumb stick. Both are designed to prevent your fingers from slipping.

338400_01_box_compingBefore I move on to Mass Effect, the Comfort triggers were nice to se but not really necessary. I could play just as well with them as without and the comfort was really just being able to pull the triggers slightly easier as it makes them bigger. The Stick I found to be uncomfortable and awkward as it restricts your thumb, although it does prevent it from slipping. Then again I can’t recall the last time my thumb slipped from a controller, so maybe that point is mute.

Onward to Mass Effect 2. The PS3 version is the same as the Xbox 360 with only a few minor differences. One is the Mass Effect 3 Engine was used for the PS3. This helps with shadows and definition but to the untrained eye you won’t notice the difference because Mass Effect 2 was not built on that engine. In some scenes it looked better, but mostly it was so close that I can’t say one is better than the other.

Secondly, the option to import your save from the first Mass Effect is not there because they never released in on the PS3. But we do get an interactive comic that allows you to relive and make those decisions that would effect the second game. The comic looked great as Dark Horse did a remarkable job. But I wish they would let you skip the storyboard sequences and just get to the decision making.

The gameplay. It’s really the same thing. Button layouts are different, but for the most part it looks and feels the same. I’ve never been fond of the PS3 controller, it just doesn’t grip and fit my hands as well. But despite that I can honestly say that Mass Effect 2 is just as enjoyable on the PS3 as it is on the Xbox 360.
