How to remove demo mode from an Archos 604

Recently I purchased an Archos 604 media player, 30GB, that had been the stores display unit. Now being a display model, it was set up with a demo mode firmware which I found out prevented me from not only connecting it to my computer to update the firmware, but from doing pretty much anything other than viewing the demo video while it was plugged it to the AC adapter. I had a problem; a great media player but no way to use it.
So I went ahead and surfed the internet for any clues as to how I could restore the unit and get it out of demo mode. One site suggested that there may be another firmware file still on the unit and I might be able to update that way. However, I found that was not the case.
I decided to resort to my resourcefulness after about a week of trying to find something on the net. What I found was an easy way to format the unit. From there I was able to connect it to my computer and transfer the latest firmware to it. I found it to be so simple, that I was surprised no one had posted a way to do it, or perhaps no one figured it out until now. More than likely someone has and I just did not find it.
So if you ever need to format your archos simply make sure the device is off, then hold down the upper button I have circled and lastly turn it on. After a few seconds you'll get the option to format the unit. Simply follow the instructions on screen. It should take a few minutes depending on how much is on the drive. After it is formatted, connect it to the computer and download the latest firmware from www.archos.com. They give you great instructions on their site.
And that is how I unlocked my Archos 604 from demo mode to the latest firmware.

I've also found that the DIVX converter works really well for converter videos I can play on my Archos, but it doesn't work on all codecs/ formats.

Hope this helps you or somebody.

I found your site after almost throwing my unit across the room. (That demo mode is very annoying.) The combination of buttons suggested did not work on my unit, but you gave me hope, and so I tried other combination of control buttons in conjunction with the power switch. Guess what? It worked! Now, just to get my Mpeg2 files to play without purchasing the $40 software....
