Time To Get Your Skunk On!

I found a pleasant surprise while at CES this year in the form of Skunk Juice. Skunk Juice makes some incredibly unique ear buds and I was lucky enough to have the opportunity to try these pungent ear buds. They were demonstrating them on the floor. Currently, even as I write this in the car on the way back from CES, I am listening the FG model. This is a promotional sample and the specs and/or design may vary from the final release. However, the rated specifications of this pair are as follows: The speaker diameter is 10mm with a frequency range of 20-20k Hz and an Impedance of 16 ohms using a gold plated 3.5mm plug. The sensitivity is also rated 101+4 db. That alone for most audiophiles makes for an easy sell.

What is it that makes these so unique? To put it simple it is raw magnetism! Seriously, they feature a connector that is magnetic, similar to Apple’s magsafe adapter. Here is how it works: plug in the 3.5mm plug into your audio device, next attach the magnetic connectors and your ready to listen. Have a friend that you just can’t wait for them to listen to the song your listening to? Plug the second pair, which features the magnetic connectors on both ends into the other, and now two can share the experience. But wait, is that not enough? Four of you can plug in via this magnetic connection. The ear buds are also come with a few custom fit pieces just in case you are like me and your ears are of a different size.

So how does it perform? Performance is key for me and it can make or break the listening experience. With these buds, I am finding a pleasant listening experience. Using iTunes and  playing some high quality music files I found the quality to be very high. In fact, I’ve only found a few headphones that would compete. Shure has a pair in the range of $200-300 that are a little better. One thing I took notice of right away was the bass, which is very rich and a bass heavy song will give you some bump. Listening, I played back songs in the genres of R&B, Rock, Country, Classical, Gospel, Rap and so on and the quality with this frequency range was right on.I also watched a few movies and wonderful sound. In fact the only thing I have found to be a slight bother is when the magnetic connector disconnects you hear some static. But I can’t blame the product for that, your breaking the connection-you should get some static. The magnetic connection also is very handy if you must disconnect in a hurry, especially if you forget they are in your ears! With good force they disconnect very easily. Although, if you get up or move away slowly- I have found the 3.5mm jack to come unplugged instead of the magnetic adapter. However, in most circumstances they magnetic connector worked quite well and quite impressively.

As far as comfort, they definitely feel good in my ears-at least once I changed the buds to the smaller size. Yes, my ears are small. Woo Hoo! These really are a game changer and I wish Skunk Juice success. I say that as I get a chill going down my spine listening to Johnny Cash signing ‘Desperado’!
